Book: Tuesdays With Morrie

Author: Mitch Albom

Mitch Albom paints a poignant story about the relationship between an old man, a young man, and life’s greatest lesson in “Tuesdays with Morrie”. The book is based on the premise that relationships live forever and only individuals in it pass away after a while.

Tuesdays With Morrie

On his graduation day, Mitch Albom bids adieu to his professor Morrie Schwartz, promising to keep in touch forever. Twenty years later, Mitch is a successful sports newscaster and writer, married and happily living a jubilant life.

One night, on the television broadcast, Nightline, he sees the interview of his long forgotten professor and learns that he is dying of some disease. Upon learning about the tragic news, Mitch gets in touch with Morrie. Delighted to hear from his student, Morrie invites him over to his place. Thus begins a fourteen week visit, on Tuesdays with Morrie and life’s greatest lesson. During this visit, Mitch learns the difference between life and death, different viewpoints of life, and the one he is currently at.

Albom subtly puts forth all perspectives, which binds several relationships of our lives  together. He also identifies that no relationship can ever be broken, it can only be bent at your own will. And every relationship has loose ends, when these ends are taken care of; nothing happens to a relationship come what may.

The book is collaboration of several feelings; depression when Mitch learns about his professor’s illness; happiness when he visits him; passion when Morrie teaches Mitch once again, and contempt when Mitch realizes what he has done.

The author successfully crafts a tale of friendship, never told before with immense importance of relationships in our lives. The narration is simply lucid and original, and the characters are so neatly portrayed that they just crawl in your heads forever.
